EU Approves Landmark IPCEI for Cloud and Edge Computing Development

The European Commission has approved an IPCEI to support advanced cloud and edge computing technologies, involving seven Member States and a total funding of €2.6 billion. The initiative aims to develop an interoperable European data processing ecosystem, enhance digital infrastructure, and create over 1,000 jobs.

The European Commission has authorized an Important Project of Common European Interest (IPCEI) aimed at fostering research and development in cloud and edge computing across Europe. Known as the IPCEI Next Generation Cloud Infrastructure and Services (IPCEI CIS), the initiative involves cooperation among seven Member States: France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, and Spain, which collectively will provide up to €1.2 billion in public funding. This funding is projected to leverage an additional €1.4 billion in private investment. The project encompasses 19 innovative initiatives undertaken by various companies, including small and medium-sized enterprises. The IPCEI CIS is groundbreaking as it seeks to build the first interoperable and openly accessible European ecosystem for data processing. This new architecture will offer real-time services through distributed computing resources, thus minimizing data transfer needs and fostering efficient data management. Furthermore, projects within this initiative will focus on developing necessary infrastructure, a reference architecture for cloud systems, advanced cloud services for seamless application, and sector-specific solutions in areas like energy and healthcare. The project stages will unfold from 2023 to 2031, creating at least 1,000 direct and indirect jobs, with initial outcomes expected by 2027. The Commission’s approval is part of a broader strategy to enhance Europe’s digital economy, making it more secure and competitive. Furthermore, it aligns with the Commission’s framework for supporting transnational projects that significantly contribute to the EU’s strategic goals without distorting competition.
