Two Chinese scammers, Haotian Sun and Pengfei Xue, orchestrated a clever scheme that defrauded Apple of 2.5 million dollars over two years. They exploited Apple’s repair service by sending counterfeit iPhones to be repaired. Often irreparable, these fake phones were sent from Hong Kong, allowing them to receive genuine replacements from Apple. They successfully pulled off this scam with more than 6,000 phones, initially aiming to defraud the company of 3.8 million dollars. Following a three-day trial in February, both men were found guilty of fraud and conspiracy. Haotian Sun was sentenced to 57 months in prison and fined nearly 1.1 million dollars, while Pengfei Xue received a 54-month sentence and was fined 397,800 dollars. Sun will also serve three years of supervised release after his prison term.
